Jos House

This small house was designed by BLACK for the owners (an expatriate family living in Uganda) who wanted a cozy, modern and compact retreat home in their home town in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria.

The Idea behind

In this home, a traditional gabled roof combines with modern cubic forms to create a unique yet unified whole. This sharp contrast in form is further emphasized by the contrast in materials from the rustic stone on the outside of the single level volume to the painted gabled double storey volume.

Inside the house, the rectangular single level volume houses the public spaces (i.e. kitchen and living/dining space) in one big open plan space and is where the owner gets to entertain their guests. On the hand, the adjacent square volume houses the more private rooms of the house (i.e. the bedrooms). .

The result is a small house which despite its strong modern geometry, feels cozy than crisp and  whose interior is designed to feel spacious than large.
